In contrast to their last visit to the Emirates when they conceded three times in five minutes almost a year ago, Liverpool needed to show their new-found defensive resolve as a confident Arsenal started and finished the brighter. Can't be accused of going missing in this one. Xhaka's passing range was to the fore as well over 90 minutes he appeared to enjoy, now freed from his recent toils as an emergency left-back.
The first thing is that the Premier League is the first competition for us because it is giving us the big regularity in the season.
However, Alexandre Lacazette scored inside the last ten minutes to salvage a point for the home side at the Emirates.
Much was made of the relatively favourable run of fixtures across which Arsenal compiled a 13-match unbeaten run heading into the Liverpool encounter, but this performance bore little resemblance to the frantic mess of the defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea back in August.
Will both teams score goals on Saturday?
Emery wants players that believe in his idea and his system of play, and he's slowly instilling that collective mentality in his players.
"Against Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool - these are three teams in front of us (in the table) and you can see how three different matches we played", said Emery. When we had the ball it was good, we were a threat, we were in behind. "We have more mistakes than the ref, but it would have been cool if this goal could count!"
Arsenal boss Unai Emery took comfort from his side's impressive performance, as he suggested Lacazette's late leveller earned his side a deserved point. However, Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno spread himself well to deny the Dutchman an unlikely goal. Helped control the game and finally looked like the midfield general Arsenal need him to be. Indeed, Torreira's steel and doggedness in midfield is on of the keys to Arsenal's newly discovered backbone. The Uruguayan is the defensive midfielder Wenger's teams had lacked for at least a decade, and he has brought tenacity, vision, energy and a smart football brain to Emery's Arsenal. Only Manchester City have scored more than the Gunners this term, while the link-up play between the attacking quartet of Lacazette, Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil and Mkhitaryan was breath-taking at times.
Emery, though, hopes his belief in Arsenal's new era can be underlined by a positive result.
