Federal authorities were investigating suspicious packages sent to former US president Barack Obama and former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, the US Secret Service said on Wednesday (October 24).

A separate package addressed to Obama, according to the Secret Service, was intercepted at a screening facility at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, a 365-hectare military facility in Washington.

Hillary Clinton was attending campaign events for Democrats in Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday and was not at the family's NY residence at the time.

The NYPD told CBS News that the bomb squad reported to a suspicious package on the third floor, and they evacuated that floor and the second floor.

A bomb has reportedly been recovered from the premises of former US President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton's home located in New York City suburb.

FBI officers investigating the serial mail bomber found two more suspicious packages on Friday, bringing the total to 12.

A USA official told The Associated Press that investigators believe the explosive that was discovered near the Clintons' home was linked to one found Monday at the Soros compound.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the packages, and the White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a statement condemning "attempted violent attacks", going them "despicable" and saying all necessary actions will be taken against "these cowards".

On Wednesday, the discovery of a suspicious package addressed to NBC and MSNBC correspondent John Brennan found inside CNN's mailroom caused the evacuation of its NY offices.

"So far the devices have been what appeared to be pipe bombs", John Miller, the NY police deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, told a news conference.

A spokeswoman for Mr Obama declined to comment on the incident, and referred reporters to the Secret Service statement.

The incidents came a day after an explosive device was found in the mailbox of democratic billionaire George Soros home in NY. Grateful for swift response of @SecretService, @FBI & local law enforcement.

The packages addressed to Obama and Clinton were meant to arrive at their residences. Another device was reported early Thursday, seemingly directed at the actor and frequent Trump critic Robert De Niro.

"The people of NY city will not be intimidated", de Blasio said.

Initially, there were reports that a suspicious package was also mailed to the White House, but those turned out to be incorrect - the Secret Service clarified those reports in a tweet.

A law enforcement official says the pipe bombs that were sent to several prominent Democrats and CNN were packed with powder and shards of glass.
