Kedar Jadhav and Hardik Pandya, still recovering from the injuries picked up during the recently concluded Asia Cup, were ruled out while pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were rested, taking into account their recent workload.
Shardul Thakur's much-awaited Test debut turned into a nightmare as the India speedster was forced to leave the field due to a groin strain after bowling only 10 deliveries on the first day of the second Test against West Indies on Friday. However, he was soon back in action during Vijay Hazare Trophy league phase for Mumbai but there were questions about his fitness status.
"That's the reason why we have included Khaleel, Shardul [Thakur] and Shami in this squad now", he said. "I think we have a better idea of what we are looking to do against him".
Axar Patel had also injured himself during the Asia Cup but his place was lost because of Ravindra Jadeja's successful comeback. The spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal has been named in the Indian team. Karthik got several starts in the tournament but could not convert them into bigger scores when India lacked solidity in the middle order. Rishabh Pant, with impressive performances for India in recent Test matches, received his maiden ODI call-up.
After the hosts won the first Test by a record innings and 272 runs, there are hardly any signs that there will be a change in the script as the second Test promises to be another run-feast. Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Ambati Rayudu, and Manish Pandey complete India's batting line-up. Thakur was a part of the Indian squad during the five-Test series in England but did not play a single game.
