Kim, 72, has been Kim Jong Un's most trusted policy adviser since the North Korean leader began a peace offensive with the USA and South Korea in January.

North Korea has previously said it was willing to discuss denuclearization, but experts have expressed concern over the varying definitions of the term held by Washington and Pyongyang. Trump had earlier tweeted about "excitement in the air!" The 70-year-old, who was not on the North Korea trip, was active in Trump's feud with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the weekend.

He also shared a photo of himself and Trump and told the entire world that he's "honored" to call the president a friend.

The two leaders are at the site, with Kim arriving at 8:55 p.m., and Trump showing up five minutes later.

Hours earlier, a jet carrying Kim landed.

The report also said Mr Kim was accompanied by his foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, defence minister No Kwang Chol and sister Ms Kim Yo Jong.

He explained that he gave the North Korean official Trump's book, "Art of the Deal", while he was in North Korea.

When Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited the worldwide media center for the summit at F1 Pit Building on Sunday, he said it will cost the city state "around 20 million Singaporean dollars" (W16.1 billion, US$1=W1,078) to host the "historic summit".

Trump is set to meet with Lee on Monday. Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to manage expectations, saying more than one meeting may be necessary.

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North. Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, Ambassador Sung Kim, and National Security Council Senior Director for Asia Matt Pottinger will join for the working lunch.

After a sudden and welcome turn to diplomacy following last year's threats, insults and fears of war - remember "fire and fury" and "dotard"?

We'll bring you the news as the day unfolds.

But it was only Monday morning in North Korea that the government news agency reported that Kim was in Singapore, had met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and would meet Trump on Tuesday.

It is believed that Trump and Kim will begin with a two-hour one-on-one session with translators, before an expanded meeting that includes advisers.

What was initially portrayed by the White House as a summit meant to completely rid the North of its nuclear weapons is now being cast as a chance to "start a dialogue" and for Trump the dealmaker to look into the eyes and take the measure of his nuclear-armed antagonist.
