Rodong said Kim is in Singapore to work on 'establishing new DPRK-U.S. relations... building a durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula...realizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern'.
South Korea's president on Monday welcomed the upcoming Singapore summit as a "historic milestone" to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula, but noted that Seoul must be part of any future negotiations with the North, which could take years.
Although gaps remain over what denuclearisation would entail, Trump sounded a positive note in a lunch meeting with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
"I think within the first minute, I'll know", Trump said, "just, my touch, my feel - That's what I do".
He also thanked his Singapore hosts for their hospitality.
During his meeting with Lee, Trump remarked, "We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow".
"I am on my way to Singapore where we have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World", Trump wrote in a pair of tweets.
Authorities have beefed up security around the hotels where Trump and Kim (Saint Regis) will be staying in central Singapore.
The standard thinking goes that he needs quick help to stabilize and then rebuild an economy that has suffered amid a decades-long pursuit of nuclear bombs, and that the North Koreans see a unique chance to win concessions, legitimacy and protection from a meeting with a highly unconventional US president who's willing to consider options past American leaders would not.
The quick succession of combative G7 meetings and his arrival in Singapore for a summit with North Korea's dictator set up a striking contrast best captured by a pair of tweets Trump issued after leaving Canada in which he slammed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as "very dishonest & weak" and reneged on U.S. plans to sign a joint communique with the G7 leaders. This isn't like the United States and Iran.
Ponsei University's John Delury told Singapore broadcaster AsiaNews that Trump was a disruptive force in traditional diplomacy but his tactics of a one-on-one meeting could work.
Donald Trump arrived in Singapore on Sunday.
The summit's venue is the Capella hotel on Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port with luxury hotels, a Universal Studios theme park and man-made beaches.
North Korea's willingness to develop fuel and weapons in secret, to sell nuclear technology and missiles to other rogue states, and its attempts to use its status as a nuclear power as a negotiating tool are features, not bugs, of its defence and foreign policy. Economic adviser Larry Kudlow told CBS News in Washington that "Kim must not see American weakness", adding that by criticizing new tariffs, Trudeau was "pouring collateral damage on this whole Korean trip".
