Casey was given a five-year deal to lead the Pistons, two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team didn't release the terms of the contract.
The all-time winningest coach in Raptors history, Casey led Toronto to the franchise's first 50-win season in 2015-16, recorded 50-plus wins in each of the last three seasons and posted a franchise-record 59 wins and the top seed in the Eastern Conference in 2017-18. The NBA coach of the year finalist was sacked shortly after Toronto was swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers with one year remaining on a three-year, $18 million dollar extension.
The only coaching vacancy remaining belongs to the Toronto Raptors, and its their out-bound head coach filling the penultimate one. The club was connected to Casey early in their interview process, with University of MI head coach John Beilein also in the mix for the job. He took over a Raptors team in 2011 that was coming off a 22-60 season and built them into a regular-season beast, but he could never get over the LeBron James hump and was let go after the latest playoff bust.
The Pistons are still looking to hire someone to head their basketball operation. With the offseason officially starting after the Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers for the NBA Championship, it was time for the Pistons to pull the trigger.
"I'm confident that this team has the pieces in place to compete at a very high level", Mr. Casey added.
Casey is the front-runner for the NBA's coach of the year award to be presented later this month.
He coached the Minnesota Timberwolves for a little more than one season, going 53-69. Toronto won four Atlantic Division titles during Casey's tenure.
Casey is getting his third shot to lead an National Basketball Association team.
