Cruise, who played Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the hit military action film, also tagged producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Skydance Media, who are tipped to be behind the sequel. He's holding his helmet, which features "Maverick" across the back.

Referencing the original 1986 film's popular catchphrase, "Feel the need" was written across the image.

"Feel the need", the epic post on Instagram and Twitter says, along with the hashtag #Day1.

Previously, Cruise has said Top Gun: Maverick is a "competition film like the first one" that is "in the same vein, the same tone as the first one".

The Navy responded by simply tweeting, "Remember, boys, no points for second place" - an ode to one of the movie's more memorable quotes.

There is an unbelievable role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. "The tone of that movie and what those guys were doing was very different". It's just a different world now, so you can't remake the first movie.

Other than Tom, no other official casting has been announced.

In the 1986 film, Goose died after hitting his head when he and Maverick were forced to eject from their F-14 in a scene that left most cinema-goers in bits.

The Navy says this week it gave Paramount Pictures access to Naval Air Station North Island, here in San Diego, to support the production of 'Top Gun: Maverick'.
