Yoenis Cespedes: Placed on disabled list

Cespedes last played on Sunday in which he actually went 2-4 with a solo home run.

Yoenis Cespedes will need to take some time off to heal.

The Mets placed Yoenis Cespedes on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained right hip flexor. Cespedes has been playing through discomfort for weeks and finally underwent an MRI on Tuesday that showed the hip strain.

Callaway said Cespedes was "fine" with the decision, though the outfielder declined comment when approached by reporters.

The outfielder suffered the injury May 6 against the Colorado Rockies. The Mets aren't certain Cespedes will return when he's eligible, but they think 10 or so days without games will be enough to get him to 100 percent. He could have continued to gut it out, continue to play.

Despite efforts in training to prevent a similar situation this year, Cespedes' body has already betrayed him a quarter of the way through the season. For the season, the 32-year old is hitting.255/.316/.474 with eight home runs and 28 RBI. "He was doing a great job". Phillip Evans has been recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas and is starting in left field for the Mets on Wednesday afternoon against the Blue Jays. May. The infielder opened the year with the team and had three at-bats before being sent down in which he went 0-3 with a strikeout.
