It was just a matter of time before the UFC made their way over to one of MMA's finest European fighter breeding grounds.
At one time there had been speculation that a massive fight between Conor McGregor and Nurmagomedov could take center-stage at the UFC's first ever event in Russian Federation, but Dana White recently ruled that out, saying a fight of that magnitude would be destined for Las Vegas. As previously reported by Denis Geyko of RT Sport, the promotion will take over the Olympic Stadium in the Russian capital of Moscow on September 15.
No fights for the event have been confirmed at this time and it is highly unlikely that UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov will be among the promotion's Russian stars who will fight on the card. Tickets for the event will go on sale on Friday, June 1st.
As part of UFC's commitment to the market, Andre Gromkovski has been appointed as Vice President, UFC Russia.
"Russia is a key part of UFC's global expansion strategy", said senior UFC official David Shaw. Given that this debut in Moscow will be a Fight Night card, Nurmagomedov will nearly certainly not be on the bill, but rather saved for pay-per-view card sometime thereafter.
