Amed Rosario added three hits and two RBIs from the No. 9 spot in the batting order. It entered Tuesday's game having scored three runs or fewer 16 times in the last 25 games. After the pitcher J.A. Happ walked leading off the inning, Curtis Granderson doubled to deep right and Josh Donaldson delivered an RBI single. Richard Urena hit a three-run homer in the eighth off Buddy Baumann, who was making his Mets debut. NY has covered the spread just once in its last seven games and the total has gone under in six of those seven.
I won't focus on the continuing struggles offensively. The team is only hitting.227 with runners in scoring position and Asdrubal Cabrera is the only Met hitting over.300. With respect to those three, expecting much from the bats was a bit of a stretch, so I'll let that rotting carcass rest for a day. Zack Wheeler fell apart after a few good innings. Part of that has been schedule, part of it has been weather, part of it has been inconsistent play. That leash around his neck is probably beginning to chafe.
Juan Lagares had four hits, three RBIs and a stolen base to help NY improve to 12-0 at home against Toronto - the longest such streak in interleague history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. SportsNet New York will televise this interleague matchup. You already agonized over the R.A. Dickey trade in 2015, when Noah Syndergaard helped carry the New York Mets to the World Series, and again the next year, when he produced a 6.4-win season, as calculated by FanGraphs.
Compared to his overall season slash line of.212/.323/.450, Granderson performed well against righties on the road last season, putting up a slash line of.234/.353/.542 across 238 such plate appearances.
Martin didn't get any action in his half inning of work as Wilmer Flores grounded into a 5-4-3 double play and Jay Bruce lined out to first base. The 37-year-old outfielder, who signed with Toronto in the offseason, hit 95 home runs for NY from 2014-17 - plus three more in the 2015 World Series. The bullpen has a 3.80 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 8.9 K/9.
NOTES: Cespedes sat out after an MRI revealed a mild right hip flexor strain. Evans was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas and started in left field. He struck out three times. And a series of seventh-inning defensive changes served as a de facto surrender from manager Mickey Callaway, whose team hasn't won consecutive games since April 13.
Jacob deGrom (3-0, 1.83 ERA, 56 Ks, 1.04 WHIP) opens the set for NY coming off a 45-pitch, one-inning start in his return from the disabled list. Syndergaard's ERA looks great but he has averaged a hit per inning and has not had that dominant game yet this season. The left-hander, who gave up 10 runs over nine innings in those losses, allowed just two hits and didn't walk a batter Wednesday, when he retired the final 11 men he faced.
Zack Wheeler's pattern of following a respectable start with a clunker continued Wednesday afternoon, but with the lineup the Mets put on the field it might not have mattered if the right-hander put seven innings of zeroes on the board.
Happ (5-3) shrugged off an unofficial 18-minute rain delay in the bottom of the third inning, when the grounds crew applied several dozen bags of Diamond Dry to the soaked infield, to snap a two-start losing streak. The left-handed Happ is 4-3 with a 4.80 ERA and 56 strikeouts.
