Greensboro, N.C. - The Farmingdale State men's golf team posted an opening score of 321 on the East Course at Grandover Resort in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships.
Sophomore Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) battled back after a hard opening nine holes to play the second nine at even-par and finish tied for 30th after round one with a 4-over 75.
Baylor (-6) trails only No. 2 Texas A&M (-18) and No. 14 Clemson (-17). However, the five UA players caught fire after making the turn, carding a total of -10 on the back nine, with 16 birdies compared to only six bogeys.
The final four holes of round two will be resumed at 6 a.m. today, with round three to follow.
Freshman Alex Shead shot his second straight even-par 71 for the Jaguars and is tied for 33rd (E), while sophomore Gustav Andersson and freshmen Laken Hinton and Olof Gunnarsson picked up a few strokes in round two.
The Cyclones were led on day two by senior Denzel Ieremia. The Georgia native is tied for 18th individually. The Tide combined to shoot +7 on the front nine, collecting 11 bogeys and just four birdies. Duke's Jake Shuman, with a 64 Tuesday, is tied for sixth place at 135 (-7) with Chun An Yu of Arizona State, who shot a second-round 70. The top five teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships.
"We got off to as bad of a start as we possibly could through the first 5 holes", said CCU head coach Jim Garren. The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville fired a 5 over at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club while most of their rivals were shooting under par to fall eight spots into 10th place.
