Smith shoved Al Horford out of the air to make sure he couldn't dunk and drew a flagrant-one foul, and was then given a technical for jawing with and shoving Marcus Smart after the play."It was a good call". This caused Marcus Smart to react and come to the defense of his teammate which started a bit of a scuffle. Doing that to someone can cause serious injury and would likely spark a fight on nearly any basketball court in the country.
"That's a dirty shot", Smart said. "If you let a bully keep picking on you, he's going to keep picking on you until you finally stand up".
Beyond that, Smith's recklessness might have ignited a larger fire under the Celtics.
"The chorus of "[Bleep] you J.R." rained down on him after the Cleveland guard's flagrant 1 foul and could be heard through the TV broadcast. This is not the first time JR's done some dirty stuff, especially playing against us. Keep letting the bully keep picking on you, and he's going to keep picking on you. "One of my guys was down and I took offence to it".
After the game, which the Boston Celtics won to take a commanding 2-0 series lead, Smart didn't mince words when asked about Smith.
"I felt like it was uncalled for, that type of play there", Horford said. It wasn't like I was trying to low bridge him or something. "I blatantly pushed him. I understand why they gave me a flag there".
After the game, Smart was asked why he took such significant exception.
And now the three-time Eastern Conference champions are down 0-2, desperate for some homecourt love back in Cleveland but searching for answers too. That's what you call the polar opposite of Smart.
