Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Savaria on Tuesday took cognisance of a charge sheet filed by police against four Delhi University students who allegedly misbehaved and stalked Union minister Smriti Irani in April past year.

The incident is said to have taken place when Smriti Irani was travelling home to her Chanakyapuri area residence.

The four accused are students of Ram Lal Anand college, under Delhi University, who were in an inebriated state at the time, according to the police.

Following a complaint by the minister, the four accused were arrested for stalking as well as outraging the modesty of a woman.

Police had filed a charge sheet against Sitanshu, Karan, Avinash and Amit under the provisions of stalking, criminal intimidation and intention to insult the modesty of a woman. On their way back home, they started chasing down Smriti Irani's vehicle.

They had also apologised for their action and said that they didn't know that they had overtaken Irani's vehicle and that they didn't indulge in any "misbehaviour". However, the accused were later released on bail.

One of the accused even apologized to Irani for misbehaving with her. We didn't realise who was sitting in the auto (which the four were following). We were making a video for Instagram and the music in the auto was loud. When we overtook the auto, we didn't know that Smriti Irani was there in it.
