John Cena and Nikki Bella on May 15, 2017 in New York City.
People is now reporting that according to their source Cena made it clear he wasn't wanting to follow through with the wedding ceremony so Nikki Bella broke off the engagement because she doesn't need a "pity proposal".
Cena had always been vocal about his desire to never get married again or have children, though he seemed to concede on the former point when he proposed to Bella at Wrestlemania in April 2017.
The couple began dating in 2012 and Cena, 40, proposed to his longtime love at WrestleMania 32 past year.
'But as the day got closer, it was like he just went back to who he's always been - which is someone who puts himself first, always, ' the source added.
"The only thing that's changed [since the proposal] is he'll text me now saying like, 'I'll miss my bride.' So now he's using the term bride and fiancée which I love", she said at the time. You can't take motherhood away from a woman'.
Cena posted on his official Twitter account responding to the split with Nikki Bella. Cena is likely not going to settle down, but Nikki Bella could find love with someone else instead. "Anyone would be lucky to have her in their life - yet John acted more and more like he was doing her a favor by somehow conceding to go ahead and marry her".
Cena and Bella, who had been dating since 2012, called off their wedding Sunday and said in a statement that they need privacy.
Over the weekend, 40-year-old John took to Instagram to post a quote from Walt Whitman which read, "We were together".
The two were engaged in a rather grand fashion a year ago when John proposed to Nikki in front of a WrestleMania crowd of more than 75,000 people. 'We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives'.
"While this decision was a hard one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another".
