The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have exercised the fifth-year option on quarterback Jameis Winston's rookie contract, ahead of the May 3rd deadline.

Tampa Bay will pay Winston $20.9 million for the 2019 season, despite a 2017 campaign in which he struggled with injury. The total value of Winston's current four-year contract is $25,351,277, and his base salary for the 2018 season will be $705,000.

Winston has been the Bucs' starting quarterback since Tampa Bay selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Should Winston have another poor season and the Buccaneers decide to clean house, he can be released provided he can pass a physical. Among topics discussed during the team's media availability session was the National Football League investigation surrounding the alleged Uber incident involving Tampa Bay's signal caller. While not a flawless specimen under center, Winston's 69 touchdowns to 44 picks fairly represent his work to date.

Going into his fourth season, Winston has the chance to elevate the Buccaneers to a playoff contender, likely saving the jobs of Koetter and Licht.

Off the field, Winston is now accused of groping an Uber driver in an alleged November incident. "My focus has been with this organization, getting the guys back in here and focusing what we can do to become a better team this offseason".
