Warner Bros. tapped Bumblebee and Shut In writer Christina Hodson to pen the script for a Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey spinoff back in 2016.
Yan will be the second female filmmaker to direct a DC film, followed by Patty Jenkin's "Wonder Woman". As for Suicide Squad 2, Warrior director Gavin O'Connor is set to direct the project with Robbie, Jared Leto, and Will Smith returning for the sequel.
Dead Pigs won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance last January and Robbie was keen to bag a female director for Birds Of Prey.
This is a gamble for the studio under new leadership, given that Yan only has the small indie film Dead Pigs under her belt. The film takes inspiration from the Birds of Prey comic, which typically features a trio of female heroes like Black Canary, Batgirl, and Huntress. Robbie is close to signing a deal to star as Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", so production on the DC movie won't start until after that film is completed. Two others, Harley Quinn Vs The Joker and Gotham City Sirens with Suicide Squad helmer David Ayer, seem further in the distance. Per Deadline, "She was a Wall Street Journal reporter who worked from New York, Hong Kong and Beijing, and one of the paper's youngest reporters to land multiple stories on the front page".
