ABC has just given a series order to a spinoff of their hit comedy The Goldbergs. The new and improved '90s era spinoff will star previously introduced characters Mr. Glascott (Tim Meadows), Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen), and Barry Goldberg's (Troy Gentile) ex-girlfriend Lainey (AJ Michalka) - teachers at William Penn Academy - as they impact the lives of their students.
The untitled series has been picked up for 13 episodes in the 2018-19 season and is actually the second time it's been tried to make happen. It was the highest-rated episode of the season at that point. Goldberg, Doug Robinson and Marc Firek will executive produce.
The spinoff initially filmed a pilot for consideration previous year, but ABC passed. The series is from Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios. I was told they wanted a workplace show.
The Goldbergs is now in its fifth season and will be back for a sixth next season.
Based on the childhood of creator Adam F. Goldberg, the series follows "a young Adam as he and his eccentric family try to get by in the wonderland we know as the 1980's". Patton Oswalt narrates the show from adult Adam's perspective. According to TV Series Finale, the show has averaged 5.7 million viewers and a 1.49 18-49 rating this season. I'm really happy that ABC is at least giving it a shot an airing it as an episode.
