In fact, prices are nearly 18-cents higher than just a month ago.
The average gas price for the state is $2.53, 1 cent higher than Hampton Roads.
As recently as April 9, GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan said: "As markets have seen concern rise of a possible trade war between the US and China, oil prices have been hit hard, leading gas prices to dramatically slow their recent ascent".
The AAA Auto Club said today that pump prices will get even more expensive this week and will likely rise to the highest level in more than two years, due to rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Tennessee gas prices are the most expensive since last September, when prices were recovering from Hurricane Irma. The national average increased 17.7 cents per gallon over the past month and 30.1 cents per gallon from one year ago.
Orlando's fuel price average is near the lowest in the state and only a fraction of a penny higher than Tampa, where a similar mix of national gas station brands usually creates matching prices.
Milani says part of that spike is seasonal as the nation's oil refineries shut down for spring maintenance, and also as they switch over to cleaner burning summer grade gasoline.
States with the highest average gasoline prices: California ($3.55), Hawaii ($3.48), Alaska ($3.22), Washington ($3.20), Nevada ($3.11), OR ($3.09), Utah ($2.97), Pennsylvania ($2.94), Idaho ($2.93) and NY ($2.80).
That means, "the reasons gas prices rise will shrink", DeHaan said.
The Detroit-area's average daily gas price was about $2.77 per gallon, up about 8 cents from last week. USA oil inventories still remain almost 20 percent lower than a year ago as exports remain brisk and OPEC's continued production cuts eat away the previous glut of crude oil.
"In the past few years, the average date that gas prices have peaked is mid-May, which is just around the corner, and by all metrics, that could be very close to what we expect this time around", DeHaan said.
