The body was found by rescuers in the U.S. during the search for the family of four who were feared drowned in a swollen river in California.
Authorities discovered the body of a child near where a Valencia family's van might have crashed in Northern California, officials announced Friday.
"I have informed the family that at 10:20 this morning the Hunboldt County Sheriff's office boat team recovered a deceased juvenile approximately 7 miles south of the incident", said Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman. Alexandra Argyropoulos, who told The Associated Press previously that she contacted OR child welfare officials, said in an email Friday that Jennifer Hart ran the household "like a regimented boot camp".
The body was found on Friday on an exposed terrain which appeared to have covered by the Eel River within the last few days as a result of a recent weather storm which brought heavy rain to the area.
Investigators began to examine the possibility that the disappearance might be linked to a report that the highway patrol received on April 6 of a vehicle plummeting into the Eel River from USA 101, a north-south highway that runs through Washington State, Oregon and California.
Farther south along the Mendocino County coast, authorities continue to look for members of the Hart family, missing since an SUV made a deadly and possibly intentional plunge off a towering ocean bluff along the Pacific Coast Highway last month.
All eight are presumed dead, police said. On Thursday, deputies said they had recovered debris and personal items along the river belonging to the family.
Police identified their vehicle as a maroon or burgundy 2016 Honda Pilot with license plates 7MMX138. Also located were various personal items that were consistent with a family travelling on vacation.
The family members were identified as Sandeep Thottapilly, 41; Soumya Thottapilly, 38; Siddhant Thottapilly, 12; and Saachi Thottapilly, 9.
The family was officially reported as missing to the San Jose Police Department on April 8.
The family of four - two parents and two children - was traveling from Portland, Oregon, to their home in Santa Clarita, California, last week when they stopped communicating with relatives. The California Highway Patrol said this week that a submerged vehicle had been spotted but then lost in the current.
Sandeep, originally from Kerala, grew up in Surat city in Gujarat and settled down in the USA over 15 years ago.
