Priyanka Gandhi's husband Robert Vadra and her children (son and daughter) were also present.

Perhaps, Gandhi had in mind the backlash he and his party faced for their delayed response to the gang rape of a paramedic in Delhi on December 16, 2012. He is also likely to reach out to the parents of the victim, sources in the party said. "This is a national issue and not a political one", said Gandhi as Congress leaders and workers marched towards India Gate before police dispersed them. Urging J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to "take a stand", AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh said Mufti had no "moral right to continue with the BJP". Today, women are feeling insecure to move out of their houses.

"We are here against crimes being committed against women, against rapes, violence and murder and the government must act on this. Women should at least feel safe".

"You see their plan, first shout "minority minority", then "Dalit Dalit", and now "women women" and then try to somehow fix blame of state issues on the centre". Prime Minister had given a slogan "Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao" (Save the Daughter, Teach the Daughter) and it is during his regime that our girls are being raped. "Zakir Hussain was the main culprit with two [other] culprits", Lekhi said as she accused the media of not playing up the BJP's comments on the Kathua and Unnao rape cases.

The Congress President had tweeted on late Thursday night about his intention to go on a candle march.

"Like millions of Indians, my heart hurts tonight", Gandhi wrote on Twitter after addressing an estimated 5,000 people at Thursday's midnight vigil.

Shelja said the Modi government had reduced budget allocation for schemes related to welfare of the Scheduled Castes and "whooping decrease" in number of jobs for them. An eight-year-old girl was abducted and raped over and over before being horrendously murdered by a group of men in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua. The protest lasted almost two hours.

Priyanka Gandhi, outraged by this unruly behaviour, reprimanded the Congress workers and asked them to walk properly or else leave.
