Delhi police have arrested a 19 year-old man who had impersonated a doctor in AIIMS for the past five months and even participated in events meant for medical professionals. The newspaper report mentions that a medical booklet was recovered from him which is an exclusive for the doctors of AIIMS.

It was later revealed that Adnan Khurram, the "fake" doctor, hails from Bihar and is from Baradi Bairiya village in Champaran district. He used his forged identity to make friends across departments and among medical students. Reportedly, the accused also had access to a diary that is issued to the doctors.

On Saturday, the doctors at the hospital organised a marathon and, as usual, Khurram came to take part in it. As he was not able to answer questions from the doctors in a satisfactory manner, he was arrested by the police.

Police said it is still not clear why Khurram posed as a doctor as he has been frequently changing his statements. Apparently, one of the reasons mentioned by the accused is that he wanted to help a sick family member get preferential treatment at the hospital.

RDA president Harjit Singh said Khurram had been noticing his activities in the medical campus for the past many months and made a decision to keep a watch.

HT quoted the Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) chief Harjit Singh saying that he recently became suspicious of Khurram's activities after which he chose to keep a watch on him. AIIMS officials said the impersonation was discovered after a complaint by doctors to authorities, alleging that they had identified an "impostor" who used the hospital as a platform to attend "different political and medical events". To some, he would claim that he was a junior resident doctor while to junior resident doctors, he would introduce himself as an undergraduate medical student.

Meanwhile, a case under sections 419 (impersonation) and 468 (forgery for objective of cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against Khurram at the Hauz Khas police station.

Khurram has studied till Class X and has no criminal record. "He made his way to the WhatsApp grpups of the doctors as well". He further said that since AIIMS had some 2,000 resident doctors at the campus, it was hard to keep track of all of them, a fact that Khurram seemed to have used to his advantage. He has posted photographs of him with politician as well.
