7 inmates dead, 17 injured in Lee Correctional Institution riot

Seven inmates have been killed and at least 17 others seriously injured amid fighting between prisoners inside a maximum security prison in SC.

Numerous fights among inmates at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville resulted in seven inmates killed and 17 more needing medical attention, reports the South Carolina Department of Corrections. The incident started at around 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

SCDC says the prison was secured at 2:55 a.m. The department added that the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) were assisting prison officials in its investigation.

Lee County EMS personnel are also responding, according to a source.

At least seven people were killed after fights broke out at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, S.C., late Sunday.


In March, inmates at the prison held an officer hostage after taking control of a dorm room, The State reported. An inmate was killed during a fight in July 2017, another was stabbed to death in November, and a third was killed in February.

According to the agency, all staff and responding law enforcement officers were "safe and accounted for".
