Saul "Canelo" Alvarez cleared up rumours that he had undergone plastic surgery by revealing to fans his recent knee operation.
'I share that today I had to enter surgery to caulk the internal femoral cartilage and remove a pathological stem from my right knee, ' Canelo said on his Instagram page. Since the fight [with Gennady Golovkin] was cancelled, now was the time for him to take care of it.
"Yes, they operated on Canelo Alvarez, but it was cosmetic, there are no more details", a spokesman for Golden Boy told ESPN Deportes. "I dismiss the erroneous information published by Golden Boy president Eric Gomez". It was something that has been bothering him.
A number of potential opponents and venues have been floated since Alvarez's removal from the fight, but various obstacles - including the ability to strongly promote a high-profile match in such a short period of time - have prevented anything from coming together thus far.
The surgery comes after the Mexican withdrew from his May 5 rematch with Gennady Golovkin in Las Vegas following his failed drug tests.
Alvarez is still awaiting word on what the final ruling from the Nevada State Athletic Commission will be regarding his suspension for failing two February drug tests. The fight would be a rematch from their September 2017 bout where both boxers fought to to a split draw. But he would have been ready to fight on May 5 if there was a fight.
Gomez said Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs), 27, a former junior middleweight and middleweight world champion, likely will not attend the hearing before the Nevada commission in person but rather participate via telephone.
