Statue vandalism continues, another Periyar effigy attacked in Tamil Nadu

The accused who targetted the Periyar statue around 9 pm were both drunk, one of them was a BJP member and another a CPI worker, say reports.

Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth today condemned the behading of a Periyar statue in in Alangudi town of the Pudukkottai district in Tamil Nadu today. The incident had occurred hours after senior BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, H Raja, had claimed that statues of social reformer Periyar in Tamil Nadu are to be brought down next like the Lenin statue in Tripura.

The district authorities swung into action on hearing about the incident, carried out fix works and restored the statue to its original state by 8 am, they said.

News agency ANI reported that the Periyar statue was being reinstated in Pudukkottai.

The statue was installed near the Panchayat office in 2013.

The police are conducting an investigation into the incident.

In another case, Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mukherjee's bust was vandalized in Kolkata's Kalighat.
