When Mustang first hit the streets in 1964, owners clubs sprang up around the country, with many regional dealers creating their own personalized pony vehicle designs.

The Mustang GT California Special was first released in 1967 after being inspired by the Shelby GT coupe prototype, according to the automaker.

After the Mustang Bullitt, it's time for another Ford Mustang special edition, one that adopts a more laidback attitude - theoretically. Climbing inside, this limited-run Mustang is adorned with Miko suede seats, red stitching, and special "GT/CS" embroidering throughout. Signature California Special script badging appears on the passenger-side dash panel.

The Blue Oval on Monday announced the return of the Mustang California Special, a special treatment that dates back to the original Mustang. The next CS will get the 5.0-liter V8, a manual or automatic transmission and a few other unique pieces. On downshifts, the engine rpm instantly kicks up to smooth out the transition between gears.

Also on the tech side is the B&O Play 1,000-watt sound system with 12 speakers and a 10-channel amplifier.

Power and torque remain the same 460 hp/420 lb-ft as the regular 2018 Ford Mustang GT. The EcoBoost version gets active exhaust flaps.

"People have been talking a lot about the 2019 Mustang Bullitt", Ford spokesperson Jiyan Cadiz said. This class-exclusive quad-tip exhaust system can be controlled by the drive mode system or via personalized MyMode settings through the 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument panel, as well as through the standard 4.2-inch cluster.

Lastly, Mustang is adding two new hues to the color chart for 2019: Velocity Blue and Need for Green. But the company did announce that the new model year cars will go on sale this summer.
