Three soldiers die in Kashmir avalanche

A snow avalanche Friday evening hit an army post along the LoC in north Kashmir's Kupwara district killing three soldiers, sources said.

Initially, four soldiers were declared missing.

However, three soldiers succumbed at 92 base hospital Badamibagh, Srinagar.

The avalanche, reports said, struck at 4:30 pm at Sona Pandi Gali (SPG) in Machil sector along the Line of Control (LoC). The deceased soldiers have been identified as Havaldar Kamlesh Kumar, Naik Balbeer, and Sepoy Rajinder while Sepoy Bipin is said to be stable.

In December a year ago, two soldiers were killed in an avalanche along the Line of Control in Kashmir's Gurez sector. A soldier injured in the incident was shifted to a hospital in Srinagar, he added.

Also, a low danger warning of level-1 was issued for Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, Udhampur, Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Ganderbal and Leh district.

In 2012, a massive avalanche in the Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir killed 140 people, including 129 soldiers.

North Kashmir faces the maximum impact of avalanches.

While two soldiers had slipped down a mountain slope in Nawgam sector of Kupwara district, three others went missing from a forward post in Kanzalwan sub-sector of Gurez in Bandipora district during heavy snowfall on Tuesday.
