Tom Hardy in 'Venom'

One thing we can tell you with absolute certainty is that director Ruben Fleisher had earmarked both Planet of the Symbiotes and Lethal Protector when crafting his live-action adaptation, one he believes will deliver a "stunning performance" from Tom Hardy. The image itself, however, gives us a huge indication of just how much it will be taking from the David Michelinie comic, thanks to the notes on Eddie's notepad.

Sony Pictures' Venom is apparently moving right along in production, despite the fact that it's neither a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe nor connected to Sony's current Spider-Man franchise.

Since Sony is no doubt eager to reveal its black-tendrilled, giant-fanged symbiote creature via a later trailer, this initial glimpse is simply of Hardy as Eddie Brock, the man who's eventually taken over by the parasitic alien Venom. I'll be honest with you: it's not really a particularly shocking pic since Eddie Brock is just an average guy about Tom Hardy's age, so it kiiiinda just looks like Tom Hardy as. well, Tom Hardy.

Needless to say, trouble follows hot on Brock's heels, as the miniseries saw Venom being hunted down by the sinister Life Foundation. In it, Venom moves from New York City to San Francisco after coming to an agreement with his former foe Spider-Man. In "Planet", an army of symbiotes descends upon the Earth. Fleischer confirmed the storylines while at the Brazil Comic-Con back in December. In it, we get to see Fleischer talk for a bit before Tom Hardy comes in and makes the fans go nuts with a free T-shirt.

Filming on Venom is already underway with Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott, and Scott Haze all joining Hardy.

Venom is scheduled to open in theaters on October 5, 2018.
