Jon Gruden to target John Morton if tabbed by Raiders

Hours before Del Rio was let go, Indianapolis reportedly fired Chuck Pagano.

Morton was promoted to senior offensive assistant with the Raiders in 2002, a year after Gruden had moved onto the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - and the last time Oakland made the Super Bowl.

Jack Del Rio was sacked by the Raiders immediately after their Week 17 loss.

If ESPN's Adam Schefter is right, you bet your Spider 2 Y Bananas. Del Rio said his first two years were great, while this year was a great disappointment.

Even though Gruden has been hesitate in the past to return to coaching, he will have enough power within the organization that he can reshape the entire front office and coaching staff, though some holdovers still remain from his first time coaching the team. "The only question is when it happens". Gruden still has one broadcast to do for ESPN's coverage of Wild Card weekend, but after that it's expected that he'll be named the Raiders' new coach.

It should also be noted that Gruden now works for ESPN and presumably Schefter would not make such a proclamation without some assurance that his statement was accurate.

The Raiders are interested in bringing back Jon Gruden, who they traded to the Bucs after 2001 season. According to Schefter and Mortensen, the deal could be structured in a way that would compensate Gruden if the ownership portion were not approved. Jack Del Rio announced his own firing just moments after the Raiders lost their final game of 2017 to finish at 6-10, and it seems clear owner Mark Davis is hell bent on getting Gruden back. But the ESPN color commentator played dumb Tuesday when asked whether he was being courted by Oakland. Del Rio then had an awkward and emotional post game press conference with the media where he addressed his dismissal.
