EPL: Kane beats Shearer record for most goals

Kane needed just one strike to surpass Alan Shearer's 22-year-old record of 36 goals but he broke it in style with a superb Wembley treble in the 5-2 demolition of Southampton.

Asked whether he could go on to beat Shearer's career record of 260 EPL goals, the Argentinian noted the consistency the former Newcastle and Blackburn striker showed throughout his career but said Kane had the quality to produce something similar.

Since scoring in his first league start for Spurs in a 5-1 win over Sunderland on April 7, 2014, Kane has netted 93 Premier League goals in 131 games, a scoring rate of 0.71.

Tottenham have collected 13 points from their last five Premier League games to hoist themselves up to fifth place in the table.

Kane then overtook Messi as the top scorer of the year in Europe for club and country by tapping in Son Heung-min's low cross in the 39th minute.

The hat-trick was completed with 12 minutes left as Johann Berg Gudmundsson lost the ball before Alli's first-time pass allowed Kane to drive across Pope and into the far corner with his left foot.

And it's two more than Teddy Sheringham, who Kane (96) is now one behind in terms of most Premier League goals for Spurs.

The footballer said he was delighted to be compared to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. You deserve to hold the record of most @premierleague goals in a calendar year. The hat-trick is nice for him but we could have scored more than three.

10 - Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli were the most frequent providers for Kane with 10 assists apiece.

"They are fantastic players here".

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino hailed the achievement of his star forward.

With question marks over the future of left back Danny Rose, amid reports from the Daily Mail that Manchester United could pursue a £50million deal for the England worldwide, Spurs need to eye up a potential replacement - and their top target has been on their radar for some time. Saints did the opposite, backing off Son, Alli and Eriksen naively and allowing Spurs to pick them off at will. Sofiane Boufal pulled a goal back for Southampton in the 64th and substitute Dusan Tadic scored in the 82nd.

Saints visit Manchester United on December 30 and barring a shock, they're likely to start 2018 in the relegation zone or just above it.
